On September 12, the Board of Supervisors authorized the advertisement of the proposed ordinance amending Chapter 300, Article II, §300-11 of the West Whiteland Township Code regarding STOP intersections.
Two intersections within the Township have been identified as having non-standard STOP sign configurations including Township Line Road/Biddle Drive at Valley View Drive and Balderston Drive at Westfield Drive.
Both locations are T-intersections with two STOP signs…one on the bottom leg and the other on one of the through approaches. This is not consistent with driver expectations. Drivers not familiar with the intersection expect that if one through leg has a STOP sign, the other also does. This often results in confusion, unnecessary conflicts, and potentially accidents.
Adding a STOP sign on the third leg will create an all way stop condition, which is a more common expectation among drivers. The Township is considering this due to residents’ concerns for public safety.
