Since 2002, the Police Department has counted a BMW R1150 RTP motorcycle among its fleet of vehicles to enhance patrol services in the Township. The BMW is the most widely used Police motorcycle in the world and was selected by West Whiteland PD because of the special features it offers. Features such as anti-lock brakes, saddlebags for storage, police radio, lighting and siren equipment help make this vehicle a highly efficient Police tool.
The motorcycle, often referred to in Police parlance as simply the “motor”, is especially efficient in high traffic volume conditions. Due to its maneuverability, the motor can travel alongside standing traffic or even split lanes in order to arrive at the scene of the emergency more quickly than other Police units. In our retail centers, this tool has become a real asset to the Police Department due to its rapid response capabilities to emergencies and in effective, high-visibility patrol, especially during the holiday season.
Of course, a tool is only as good as the people who use it. The Officers assigned to this unit are volunteers who have undergone extensive training in the safe and efficient operation of this vehicle. Their expertise in handling the BMW and their pride in being a member of this Unit has provided outstanding opportunities for interaction with our citizens. The Officers of this Unit are now accustomed to having citizens approach them with questions about the motorcycle and curiosity about its functions. The “motor” will continue to play an important role in the delivery of Police services in West Whiteland Township.
